Artsy Fartsy

In our first week in New Delhi, we were at a staff welcome back party when a friend casually asked us, "Are you going to try our for the faculty musical? It's Beauty and the Beast." Since it was my the first time hearing of it, I tried to act nonchalant whilst hiding my excitement. As you may know about Becky and I, we really like attention.  Sometimes when we are with other people, we race to see who can be more ridiculous; the loser has to be the adult for the night.

So when we get a chance to be ridiculous in front of a 450 person audience two nights in a row, you can bet that the Curreys are in.

That leads us to last Friday and Saturday night where, after 5 months of rehersals, we finally put on the show. Just in case you don't remember the Disney classic, I played the incredibly handsome, chauvinistic, and muscular town hero Gaston.

Becky was cast as a "Silly Girl." Her job in the play was basically to faun over me the entire time. She even tried to explore her role and discovered that she was in fact playing the 'dumb one.'

It ain't easy being Gaston.
Spring (purple) and Sharon (pink) also find me intoxicating. This picture is actually just candid shot from a normal day at school.

The shows went off incredibly well. Doing the show was a really awesome opportunity for Becky and I to be able to connect with colleagues that we might otherwise never really get to know, especially at a school of 150 staff members where each one is incredibly busy all the time. Most importantly we were able to raise $4,000 for the Salaam Baalak Trust. Salaam Baalak is an awesome organization that helps provide education, training and shelter for the young poor people in New Delhi, and there are so many here.

Here are some pictures for the show. Everyone was really quite good. Tahireh, see earlier blogs for reference, was Belle and was phenomenal. Her awesome voice made the rest of us sound like garbage. Thanks Tahireh! The other cool thing about the play is that staff kids can be in the musical too. They were given a ton of responsibility and handled it really well. Surprisingly well even.

So if you are making travel plans for next year, maybe you will want to come around the end of January to catch next years play, Annie. I plan to die my hair red if that give you a clue of who I am auditioning for!
