Having lived in Asia for three plus years, you think that I would learn to accept the blunt comments/criticism that my Asian friends like to dole out.
The following statements and questions have been thrown my way over the years:
-What's wrong with your face? (A sincere question!)
-You look much better. (After a haircut.)
-No muscle. (During a massage. No tip)
Becky has received the following praise:
-Ooooh, are you pregnant? (Said to Becky when we got back from break this year.)
-You look fat.
-You look much better than you did last year. -You have a pimple on your face.
-Did you gain weight.-You look better with makeup.
Keeping that in mind, it should have come as no shock when our school secretary asked me today, "Did you lose the weight?" I asked her "What weight," feigning ignorance due to the grammatically incorrect question. "The weight," she said, pointing at my stomach. "Are you stressed." No confusion there. I gave a little smile and just told her that I am skinny.
So thank you for that Asia. I guess that means that I am going to be getting back into the weight room starting Monday to see if I can lose the weight-loss - that is, put on some weight. And I thought that I had escaped those comments about my weight once stopped living in the same country as my mom.
The lesson here is: In Asia, everyone is your mom...only its Marie Barone.
